Story: Karthick(Madhavan) and Sakthi(Shalini) meet at a wedding. After the wedding is over they go back to their places. One day, Karthick sees Shakti on a train and she sees him too, and thats when love sparks for Karthick. After many meetings they both fall in love. When they ask the consent of their parents, Karthick's parents disagree since they are all rich . So then, Karthick and Sakthi get married legally with the help of Sakti's sister Poorni,(Swarnamalya) and Karthick's friends. Sakthi says that she will live in her house and Karthick will live in his, with no one knowing about the marriage. But when a marriage proposal comes for Poorni,and they come to see her the grooms younger brother wants to marry Sakthi. Thats when Sakthi has to tell the truth that she and Karthick got married. Both,Sakthi and Karthcik, get kicked out of their houses,they both move into an apartment thats still being built. Everything goes smoothly until................
Madhavan and Shalini were amazing! :D They brought life into the characters,their mannerisms were a plus point. They made it look so real. The chemistry between them was soo alive,and refreshing,something different. I personally thought it was wayyy better than the on-screen chemistry of Shalini-Ajith. They rocked in the songs Snehithane and Kadhal Sadugudu,they were sizziling! hehehehe :D Swarnamalya has a pretty important role too, the movie takes a turn sort off because of her ( she isn't evil or anything!)
Music: The music was wonderful! :D A.R Rahman rocks!! :D All the songs were composed by A.R Rahman except the title song Alaipayuthey. The tracks were:

Awards:
Madhavan won the Filmfare award for Best Debut Male in 2000, which he totally deserved.If there was a best Pair award back then it should have gone to Madhavan and Shalini :D I think Shalini won the Special Best actress state award, I don't exactly know. A.R Rahman won the Filmfare Best Music Direction Award for this movie in Tamil.
Remake: It was remade into Hindi as Saathiya with Vivek Oberi in Madhavan's role and Rani Mukherjee in Shalini's role. The same music was used too. It was directed by Mani Ratnam's Assistant Shaad Ali. I have seen Saathiya also, and its nothing compared to Alaipayuthey! Rani and Vivek don't even have chemistry between them its soo dull. She looks sooo older than him. It wasn't even near as good as this masterpiece. It was also dubbed into telugu as Sakhi.
This movie is a milestone in both of Madhavan's and Shalini's Career. But, it is sad that this was Shalini's last movie she shot for fully before she got married to Ajith. i completely agree about the chemistry.especially in the songs Kaadal sadugudu and snehidhane..they feel almost real! whenever i saw kadal sadugudu i always used to imagine i am going to be crazy like this with my hubby! and i am as well :)
