Richa to romance Mahesh Babu

If reports are to be believed, Richa Gangopadhyaya will be Mahesh Babu's heroine in ace Mani Ratnam's next Tamil-Telugu bilingual, based on the popular Tamil novel 'Ponniyin Selvan' written by Kalki Krishna Murthy. If this happens, it would be Richa's first Tamil film.

The Tamil version has been titled Ponniyin Selvan, while Telugu version is yet to be titled. They star Tamil heroes Vijay and Arya besides Mahesh Babu.

According to reports, Anushka plays Mahesh Babu’s younger sister as well as Vijay’s love interest in this film. Vijay will play the courageous warrior Vallavarayan Vandiyatheyan and Mahesh Babu will play King Aditha Karikalan. The role of Arulmozhi Varman (who later becomes Raja Raja Chozha), will be played by Arya.

A.R Rahman, sure-shot in Ponniyin Selvan

There is a huge buzz surrounding Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan. Kalki’s epic classic has captivated generations of Tamilians and continues to do so. Fans of his work are anxious to find out who will play the characters that are deeply ingrained in their hearts. So far Vijay, Mahesh Babu, Arya, and Anushka have been confirmed for the project.

In recent times, Mani and A.R Rahman have teamed up together to create memorable music and so it was believed that they would come together again for this mammoth undertaking. But there were reports that Rahman is far too busy with international projects to be a part of Ponniyin Selvan.

However, sources within Mani’s camp insist that it will be Rahman who will be doing the music. It must be remembered that Mani had wished to make Ayutha Ezhuthu without music but Rahman would not hear of it. He came up with some magnificent tunes and convinced Mani to include the songs in his movie. This time also the two legends will work together and hopefully the results will do the Tamil film industry proud.

‘Ponniyin Selvan’ in Mysore Palace

Mani Ratnam films are also known for its unique locations. Even ordinary Indian locations will look exotic in his films. The popularity of the Malshej Ghats in Maharashtra and the Athirapally waterfalls in Kerala achieved new glories after Mani Ratnam had them in his ‘Raavanan’.

For his next epic film ‘Ponniyin Selvan’, Mani Ratnam will be depicting the Mysore Palace in new light, colour and grandeur. The Mysore Place is said to be the most essential location of the period film that narrates the story of Rajaraja Cholan of the Chola Dynasty during the 10th-11th century.

Apparently Mani Ratnam and his team had already met the Mysore Palace Mandali deputy director P.V.Avaradhi and handed over the letter seeking the permission.

Mysore Palace and its neighboring Lalitha Mahal Palace have always been among the favourite locations of our film makers.

More details on Mani’s film

Mani Ratnam’s yet-to-be-started ‘magnum opus’, which is said to be inspired by Tamil’s much celebrated novel Ponniyin Selvan by Kalki, is getting more additions each passing day.

A day after it was said that Arya would be part of this multicrore multistarrer, we have it now that Anushka, who is making waves in Kollywood and Tollywood simultaneously, has also been roped in for this project.

“Anushka has signed on the dotted lines. She is playing a very crucial role in this film. Others who had been finalised for the project so far are Vijay, Mahesh Babu and Arya,” say sources.

A bilingual, the film will be produced by Mani’s Madras Talkies. However, plans are on to join hands with other production houses at a later stage. “It is still a question that whether the movie would be in historic background or Mani would give the script a contemporary look,” sources add.

Vijay, Vishal, Vikram in Mani Ratnam's film

Veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam, sources say, has decided to cast Vijay, Vishal and Vikram in his next film. The director is getting the script ready for his next film and is penning it down with these three stars in mind.

Mani Ratnam is one of the few directors who cast multi-heroes in his films and tasted success in films like Agni Natchathiram, which had Karthik and Prabhu; Iruvar, which saw the coming together of two legends Mohanlal and Prakash Raj and Thalapathy which had two superstars Rajinikanth and Mammootty.

This time the ace director will be instrumental in bringing the three current biggies of Kollywood together – Vishal, Vikram and Vijay.

'Neelavaanam': The reverse effect

What is special about Mani Ratnam's 'Kadhal Sadugudu' song from Alaipaiyuthey? Well, he has used the reverse technique in this song which looks brilliant on screen.

Likewise, in Kamal Haasan's Manmadhan Ambu, director K.S. Ravikumar has used the reverse technique in the breezy 'Neelavaanam' number.

The song actually narrates Kamal's flashback, i.e. from his marriage to accident. But here, the director has narrated the story from the accident to marriage! Doesn't that sound interesting?

Mani’s next a period film?

Even as Mani Ratnam and his wife Suhasini are busy with the Chennai International Film Festival, rumour mills are working overtime suggesting something or other about the ace director’s next film.

Grapevine has it that the filmmaker, who took a reasonable break after working three years non-stop for ‘Raavanan’, is now ready for his new venture. And it is going to be a period film.

“Mani has conceived a knot which is set in 15th century AD. Massive sets will be erected in Kerala. The director is currently busy zeroing in on the cast and crew,” sources maintain.

“As usual, Suhasini will help Mani and this movie too will be produced by the filmmaker’s production company Madras Talkies,” they say and add: “Since the budget would be heavy, a corporate house may also step in.”

Aayutha Ezhuthu.....

This is such a great movie, well of course its Mani Ratnam. But WOW, the whole cast brings it to life be it Surya,Maddy,Sid,Esha,Meera Jasmine,or Trisha, they just add life too it :)  I actually think all three of the heroines dubbed for themselves. Even Esha sounded like she dubbed for herself :). I heard that she knows Tamil cause of her mom Hemalini. :) This movie is an eye opener for hypocrites like us to stop talking and do something, no offense. Loved the music too, my favs were Nenjem Ellam (awesome lyrics Vairamuthu) :) , Yakkai Thiri,  and Jana Gana Mana(Powerful one). But the whole soundtrack was exceptional :D AR RAHMAN WOOO!! ! :) Keep Scrolling down for my fav scenes :)

Here is the story to read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aayutha_Ezhuthu

Beastly Scenes:

LOVE THE ENDING :) :

Ughh hate the part where Sid gets beat up! and when Surya is all wounded !

If I were you, I would watch the whoollee movie :) Cause The WHOLE movies is beastly :)

Some ScreenShots: I'm pretty fluent in Tamil, but watched it with Subs anyway, but really didn't need it. But looks cool to take screenshots with subs, cause the dialogue is down there :D

Love that part ^^^

They made it! ^^^^

Thalapathi....

I have never watched Thalapathi before, but today I did. The only reason I haven't seen it was that I was scared Rajinikanth was going to die, which I don't want to see. But I got over that fear after I read there was a version where he doesn't die. So I was happy :) So I watched it today. :) :) and MAN Mani Ratnam is the true master of film making :D

If you don't know the story of Thalapathi read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thalapathi

I liked how Mani Ratnam showed the mother and son love between Srividya and Rajinikanth, it made me cry. Rajini was an amazing friend to mamukka(Mammootty) in the movie, wonderful friendship. If you watch the movie you will feel like you want a friend like that forever! :) Its just to hard to describe in words..... Banu Priya was rarely seen in the movie, Shobana was great and gorgeous as always :D But,I felt sad when she got married off to Arvind Swamy. :( Geetha acted as Mammooty's wife, she was great and she was right for the role like all the others. :) I found it awkward to see Srividya playing the mother of Rajini, I mean she was born in 1953 and Rajini was born in 1949. AMAZING acting done by Rajini , Mammootty,Shobana, and Srividya, always teared up when their sad parts came :( The great thing was that the movies story, didn't clash with Rajinikanths image, had everything that Rajini fans needed, but it still was a complete Mani Ratnam film :) Can't stop praisng!!! :D

The music was done by Ilayaraja. I say the most memorable tune would be Rakkama Kaiya Thattu sung by S.P Balasubramanium and the late Swarnamalya. Great job done by the two. It really made me clap me hands ;) The song was also in the Worlds Top Ten songs at number 4. http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/us/features/topten/profiles/index.shtml
Lyrics of Rakkama Kaiyu Thattu:

Other ones I thought that were neat were: Sundari Kannal, Janaki rocks in that song! also sung with SPB,Chinna Thaayal, sung by S.Janaki, she puts so much feeling into it that it made me cry,its great with her voice and with Rajini's acting.

SUPER SCENES:

Alaipayuthey........

Alaipayuthey, is my most favorite movie ever! :D I saw it last night for like the tenth time. Alaipayuthey means Jumping waves or waves. The chemistry between Madhavan and Shalini is so mesmerizing! :D They made an awesome pair! Sorry Ajith, but they were sizzling. The way Mani Ratnam portrayed the life of a husband and wife was so real, and romantic. It makes you feel like they are the ideal couple.
Story: Karthick(Madhavan) and Sakthi(Shalini) meet at a wedding. After the wedding is over they go back to their places. One day, Karthick sees Shakti on a train and she sees him too, and thats when love sparks for Karthick. After many meetings they both fall in love. When they ask the consent of their parents, Karthick's parents disagree since they are all rich . So then, Karthick and Sakthi get married legally with the help of Sakti's sister Poorni,(Swarnamalya) and Karthick's friends. Sakthi says that she will live in her house and Karthick will live in his, with no one knowing about the marriage. But when a marriage proposal comes for Poorni, and they come to see her the grooms younger brother wants to marry Sakthi. Thats when Sakthi has to tell the truth that she and Karthick got married. Both,Sakthi and Karthcik, get kicked out of their houses, they both move into an apartment thats still being built. Everything goes smoothly until................

Madhavan and Shalini were amazing! :D They brought life into the characters, their mannerisms were a plus point. They made it look so real. The chemistry between them was soo alive, and refreshing, something different. I personally thought it was wayyy better than the on-screen chemistry of Shalini-Ajith. They rocked in the songs Snehithane and Kadhal Sadugudu, they were sizziling! hehehehe :D Swarnamalya has a pretty important role too, the movie takes a turn sort off because of her ( she isn't evil or anything!)

Music: The music was wonderful! :D A.R Rahman rocks!! :D All the songs were composed by A.R Rahman except the title song Alaipayuthey. The tracks were:
Endendrum Punnagai- Clinton Cerejo, Srinivas, Shankar Mahadevan, A.R.Rahman
Pachchai Nirame-Hariharan, Clinton Cerejo, Dominique Cerejo
Kadhal Sadugudu-S.P.Charan
Evano Oruvan-Swarnalatha
Alaipayuthey-Harini, Kalyani Menon, Neyveli Ramalaxmi
Snehithane Snehithane-Sadhana Sargam, Srinivas
Maangalyam-Clinton Cerejo, Srinivas, A.R.Rahman
Yaro Yarodi-Mahalaxmi Iyer, Vaishali, Richa Sharma
September Madham-Asha Bhonsle, Shankar Mahadevan
My favs were Snehithane and Kadhal Sadugudu and Pachai Nirame, the most romantic ones! :D But all the tracks were just right. The lyrics of Snehithane were soo touching and romantic. All the lyrics were written by the award winning Vairamuthu.

Awards:
Madhavan won the Filmfare award for Best Debut Male in 2000, which he totally deserved. If there was a best Pair award back then it should have gone to Madhavan and Shalini :D I think Shalini won the Special Best actress state award, I don't exactly know. A.R Rahman won the Filmfare Best Music Direction Award for this movie in Tamil.

Remake: It was remade into Hindi as Saathiya with Vivek Oberi in Madhavan's role and Rani Mukherjee in Shalini's role. The same music was used too. It was directed by Mani Ratnam's Assistant Shaad Ali. I have seen Saathiya also, and its nothing compared to Alaipayuthey! Rani and Vivek don't even have chemistry between them its soo dull. She looks sooo older than him. It wasn't even near as good as this masterpiece. It was also dubbed into telugu as Sakhi.

This movie is a milestone in both of Madhavan's and Shalini's Career. But, it is sad that this was Shalini's last movie she shot for fully before she got married to Ajith. We lost such a versatile actress in the industry. Just as Amitabh Bachchan said: http://www.behindwoods.com/tamil-movie-news-1/nov-09-03/amitabh-shalini-ajithkumar-19-11-09.html . The movie is one of the best movies of Madhavan and Shalini, and my most favorite movie! :D I just can not sum up my love for this movie . :)
