The Thriller movie review done by my friend : Reju
I went for The Thriller without expecting a classic cop-movie like Commissioner. I didn't expect a Prithviraj's landmark movie like Vargam either. Thank God, it didn't disappoint me.
The Thriller, written and directed by B. Unnikrishnan, is a racy action-packed entertainer which is based on a true story- the murder of a rich spoiled brat which shook the state of Kerala last year. Prithviraj plays the role of Niranjan, a Deputy Commissioner of Police. One night while driving, he finds Simon Palathinkal, a young business man lying on the road after being brutally attacked. He dies after telling Niranjan two words which appear as a puzzle till the movie ends. The game begins from here.
The movie heavily depends upon the star value of Prithviraj. Excessive use of slow motion sequences tells it all, besides a heroic introduction and no-gravity action scenes. Though the plot is quite serious, the movie is made as an entertainer which has love songs and item dances, which is not common in a typical Malayalam cop film. It has got some sharp dialogues. I loved the one which the hero replies to heroine after she asks "Are you taking revenge?". His reply amuses me. Watch it.
One negative point I felt was, in the first 30 minutes, the film has loads of English dialogues, followed by its Malayalam translation, a format we had seen in Renji Panicker films such as Ekalavyan, Commissioner, The King etc. This time, it was boring.
Prithviraj as usual looks stylish. Sampath, who plays the antagonist, has done his part very well. Siddique, Lalu Alex and Riyaz Khan shine in their respective roles. The heroine, Catherine, has a very limited role in the film.
The songs didn't impress me. If the film had one or two hummable songs at least, it would be a better entertainer.
Cinematography and Editing are good, except in one or two scenes where the film was shot using hand-held cameras.
Overall, The Thriller is an entertainer worth a watch. Expect less and go for it. Chances are there that you may like it.http://twitter.com/#!/speed240
